ACADEMICS
Again it was a proud moment for all of us in Devi Academy when the results of Std. XII & X were announced for the year 2011. In the AISSCE (XII) Public Exam held in March 2011, the results were Excellent as usual with Sanjay Reddy Topping the list with 480 marks out of 500. He also scored a Centum in Maths. The overall performance of students was excellent and there were a lot of A1 grades in all the subjects.
- Department of Science and Technology (DST), Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India awards Scholarship for Higher Education under Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) to the students who are within the top 1% at Class XII Examination conducted by the Board for the year 2010-11. The following students from our school are within top 1% (cut off score 466 marks out of 500) and are eligible for the scholarship.

Std. X (AISSE) results were also equally good. This was the first batch of students evaluated under the Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) introduced by the CBSE. 45 students opted for board-based examination and the rest school-based evaluation. 8 students scored perfect 10 CGPA, i.e., A1 grade in all the subjects. There were many A1, i.e., grade point 10 in all the subjects. The examination reform introduced by the CBSE through CCE saw a holistic assessment of the learners. Besides scholastic areas, co-scholastic areas like Life skills, Attitudes and values, Sports and Games, Co-curricular activities were also evaluated based on the guidelines of CBSE. ‘An Achievement Card was issued by the CBSE as a Certificate giving complete details of the students.
- This is the 3rd successful year of ‘Smart Classes’ – The Digital classrooms for KG to Std. XII. This is supported by Educomp Solutions. These classes are very helpful to the students and teachers are constantly trained to handle these classes by Educomp Solutions.
- This is the 5th year with NIIT @ School Programme. The NIIT through its
2 faculty members take complete charge of Computer Education from Std. III to X including the learner’s material. NIIT also periodically trains teachers handling different subjects. - A Physics Enrichment Programme was conducted for Std. XII students.
Ms. P. N. Sundari, Dean, Velammal Schools conducted the programme. She guided them with important key points in each lesson and tips for the Physics paper. - The Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme is successfully carried out in our school. Classes VII, VIII & IX are under Hindu NIE programme and classes VI, X & XI are under Times NIE. Besides newspapers being issued to each student everyday, Workshop in Life Skills, Personality development, Public Speaking, etc., are also conducted for the students.
For the Hindu NIE students following are the modules.
- Listening and Speaking – For Class VII
- Reading and Writing – For Class VIII
- Life Skills and Cognitive Skills – For Class IX
- Alma Mater, a Training and Consultancy body, is conducting an eight session Subject + Programme for Std. IX students. There are motivational programmes which are very helpful to the children. Subject + Programme conducted in the previous years have brought positive changes in students.
- A Financial Literacy Programme for Std. IX students is being conducted to sensitize the students in real life monetary skills, savings, budgeting, investment, etc., through simple activities. At the end of the programme the students are evaluated and awarded Certificates. Out of 107 students of Std. IX & XI who appeared for March 2011 exams, 36 students received Certificate of Honour.
This programme is co-ordinated by the Madras Stock Exchange Ltd. in association with the National Institute of Stock Markets. - A Summer Internship Programme was offered by Times of India – NIE in an attempt to expose the students to the World of Journalism. Deepshika Kailash of Std. XII attended a 10-day training programme.
- It was a red letter day on February 4th, 2011. The Student Edition of 04.02.2011 was edited by our school with Principal as the Guest Editor and a bunch of students and teachers in the Editorial Team. This Newspaper issue was highly appreciated by everyone.
- Besides these, students have been appearing for various Talent Exams and Olympiad conducted by various institutions like CBSE, AMTI, NCERT, Association of Geography Teachers of India, TIME, AIIMS, FIITJEE, etc.,
- In the Math Talent Test - 2011 conducted on 20.02.2011 by Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, V. Jayasri of VI got the third prize and Gokul and N. Sriram Hariharan of VIII received the consolation prize.
V. Vaasantosh of Std. XI won the Inspire Award at the State Level and is one among 20 selected from Tamil Nadu, and will be participating at the National level competition at New Delhi on August 17th 2011.
INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) is a programme initiated by the Govt. of India to cultivate scientific temper and to inspire them to take Science as their career and Tamil Nadu Science and Technology department co-ordinates the programme in our state.
Online Proficiency Test:- An innovative programme conceived by the CBSE for Std. X students. This is a new programme launched by the CBSE for students who complete Std. X. This is mainly to test how proficient they are in different subjects. During the 1st week of July 2011, 12 students took the test in English, Social Science and 11 students in Maths and Science. Results are awaited.
EXTRA CURRICULAR AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Every human being has multiple intelligence like Musical intelligence, spatial intelligence, Numerical intelligence, Linguistic intelligence, Interpersonal intelligence, Social intelligence, etc. People who usually make it to the top are those who develop themselves in multiple intelligence. Parents who help their children to develop multiple intelligence will enable their children to be spotted out in a crowd, such children stand above the crowd. Every child is rare, unique, original and a masterpiece. To bring out and preserve the originality and creativity of the child, Devi Academy gives plenty of opportunities to the children. Inside the school various activities in the form of seminars, competitions, functions, etc., are held in which the talents are spotted out and their skills are honed. Each department conducts various competitions for which prizes are awarded. Based on their interest, aptitude and performance they are exposed to different interschool competitions. It is a galore of talents and our students have always made us proud by winning prizes at the various prestigious interschool competitions conducted by many institutions.
To mention a few
- In the Hindu Young World Painting Competition conducted by ‘The Hindu’ on 05.12.2010, Ms. B.S. Daisy Selva Rani of Std. VII ‘C’ received third prize and a Cash award of Rs.1,000/-.
- R. Prince David and K.S.Radhakrishnan of Std. X ‘A’, now in Std.XI, won the third prize in a Quiz Competition conducted on board by the Coast Guard. They also won a Cash award of Rs.2,000/-.
- V. Vaasantosh of Std. X and received a Gold Medal and a Cash Award of Rs.5,000/- at the State Level Exhibition conducted by Dept. of T.N. Science and Technology on 08.01.2011.
- V. Jayasri of VI ‘A’ and A. Virkam of III ‘A’ bagged the second prize in Smart EduGames conducted by Eversmile Learning Ltd.
- In Maths Olympiad conducted by TN Science and Technology, V. Jayasri of VI ‘A’ won the third prize with a Cash award of Rs.500/-.
- In ‘Spartan’ SpellBee Competition, K. Srividya of IV ‘A’ was a Winner at State level and Runner at National level. She received a Cash award of Rs.2,000/- and a medal. In the same competition, V. Jayasri of VI ‘A’ won a prize at the State level.
- In ‘Kalanjali Ventures 2011’, a Cultural meet organized by Bala Vidya Mandir, Adyar, R. Prince David and V. Vaasantosh won the first prize in ‘Robotics – Our Bot’ event.
- In ‘AGE’ Avant Garde Essence 2011, an Interschool Competition organized by DAV Public School, Velacherry on 11.07.2011, A. Suchithra of Class XI bagged the first prize in ‘Ship Wreck’ and K.S. Radhakrishnan of Std. XI won the second prize in ‘Eat ‘o’ Mania’.
- Kushi Lalwani and M. Reetu of VIII ‘A’ won the first prize in Mehandi designing in ‘Manjusha’, an interschool cultural fest conducted by L.M.Dadha
Sr. Sec. School. Many other prizes were also won in other categories. - At ‘Kalsarovar 2011’ conducted by Kola Perumal Vaishnav Sr. Sec. School, B.S. Daisy Selvarani won the second prize in ‘Pretty Prints’ – a painting competition.
- In the Interschool Competition conducted by Maharishi Vidya Mandir for KG students, our UKG girls won the third prize in Group Dance event and Akash of UKG ‘C’ won a prize in Theme Talk.
- Seshadri Ravisankar of Std. XII received the Dayawan Award for his contribution in nurturing karuna values. This is given by the Karuna International.
- In Rajaji Interschool Elocution Competition 2011-12 conducted by Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram, B. Bhavadharini of IX ‘B’ secured the third place in Tamil vategory and in the Rajaji Interschool Essay Competition 2011, A. Uma of XI got the first place in English category.
- XS Real Dream contest conducted in the year 2010, 5 of our students won prizes at the Interschool level. S. Mariana Chartian of Std. X won a Dell Laptop as second prize, A. Uma of Std. X won an e-notebook as the third prize, S. Nishanthini of Std. VII won a bicycle as sixth prize, C. Mitra of VII ‘C’ won a Wrist watch as category level second prize and A. Sakthi Srinidhi of Std. X won a 16 GB pendrive.
- In the Draw Kids 2010-11, Rahul .R of LKG ‘D’ won the District level First prize in the Drawing Competition. This competition was conducted by Osho Communicaiton.
- M. Subashree of IX ‘B’ was shortlisted in the Essay Writing Competition announced by International School Psychology Association (ISPA). She was invited to present her paper for the children’s assembly, a session in the 4 day 33rd Annual International Conference of ISPA held on 22.07.2011 at Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore. Her presentation was highly appreciated by the international delegates.
- In the Written Test conducted by Karuna International on Stories of Compassion, V. Jayasri of VI ‘A’ received a Cash award of Rs.1,000/- as first prize, B. Senthamilselvan of VII ‘B’ received Rs.600/- as second prize and third prize of Rs.400 was bagged by M. Manasi of IX ‘A’ and S.V. Prabath Reddy of VI ‘A’.
45 students received consolation prize of Rs.50/- each. - EVENTS AT SCHOOL
Devi Academy is always buzzing with one or the other activity. The school believes in giving a congenial atmosphere to the children for a comfortable and pleasant schooling. To take forward our rich tradition and culture all the days of National importance and festivals are observed. Besides this for a holistic development of children varieties of events are organised in the campus. Here is a brief summary of the events that took place from January 2011.
- Christmas and New Year was celebrated on 22nd December 2010 with great enthusiasm. Colourful dances and skits were staged by students. Santa Claus danced for Jingle Bells and distributed sweets. It was an enjoyable event.
- ‘Makara Sankranthi’ – Pongal, the harvest festival was celebrated with a great pomp and show. Colourful rangolis were made by students of classes VI to IX exhibiting their talents.
- Our Correspondent Ms. R. Jeyalekshmy took the salute on Republic day on 26th January, 2011. There was a brisk March Past led by the School Captain, with
4 house captains and vice captains along with their house students. Patriotic songs were sung by the school choir and KG students dressed up as various freedom fighters reminding us of the sacrifices they made for the nation. - Tiny Tots had their Sports day on February 4th, 2011 at the school premises. Dr. S. Srinivasan, Orthopaedic Surgeon of Sai Orthocare, T.Nagar was the Chief Guest. Std. II marched brilliantly. Std. I and UKG students performed a colourful drill display. After conducting finals for a few events, prizes were distributed to the winners by the Chief Guest.
- Science Day was observed on 26th February, 2010. A Powerpoint Presentation on important Indian inventions and discoveries was presented to students.
Mr. Sudarshan, a Social Activist spoke to the children about important contributions made by Indians to the field of Science. He highlighted important discoveries and inventions made by Indians in Ancient India. The talk was highly inspiring and informative. - The Annual Day of the Tiny Tots was celebrated on 5th March, 2011. The theme for the Annual Day was colours. Cultural Programmes were presented by the children which were highly appreciated by everyone. Ms. V. Gowrilakshmi, Principal, Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Anna Nagar graced the occasion as Chief Guest and distributed the prizes to the winners of various competitions conducted in the school throughout the year.
- KG Convocation Day was held on 25th March 2011 for UKG students. Graduation Certificates were issued to all the UKG students who graduated from UKG to Std. I. Our Correspondent Ms. R. Jeyalekshmy distributed the certificates.
- The new academic session 2011-12 started on 1st April.
- Founder’s Commemoration Day was observed on 2nd April, 2011. There was a solemn bhajan presented by our students.
- On 19th & 20th April, 2011, MV Diabetes Centre, Gopalapuram conducted an Awareness Programme for students of VI to X through Powerpoint Presentation. Students were asked to fill a questionnaire at the end of the programme. Child Obesity, Juvenile diabetes were highlighted.
- The school reopened on 15th June, 2011 for UKG to Std. XII after summer vacation.
- Pre KG and LKG had their re-opening on 20th June, 2011. Parents were given orientation by the Principal. It was a happy moment for most of the children as it was the first day of their schooling.
- World Population Day was observed on 11.07.2011. Class VIII students presented a skit depicting the challenges posed to the country due to over population.
- Students of Std. IX & XI presented a programme on the awareness of Climate Change on 6th of July 2011. This was in connection with the Vanamahotsav week (July 1st to 7th). Saplings were given by the students and they took an oath to protect the plants by taking proper care of them.
- A free diabetic screening was done for all the staff on 25th June, 2011 by Mohan’s MV Diabetes Hospital, Gopalapuram. The staff who were detected to have sugar problem were given medical advice and were given treatment at their centre.

SPECIAL MENTION
- Karuna International has selected our School for organizing Outstnading Karuna Club Programmes and activities for the academic year 2010-11.
A felicitation function will be held on 06.08.2011 (Saturday) at 9.30 a.m. - An amount of Rs.3,000/- was contributed to Hunger Free Foundation organized by Mr. E. Sarath Babu, CEO, FoodKing, by the Interact Club 2010-11.
Present day students are very intelligent, knowledgeable, resourceful and full of enthusiasm and energy. To cope up with the challenges posed by the younger generation, teachers have to equip themselves fully well and need constant updation of knowledge and other skills. Hence Principal and her team regularly attend various training programmes / workshops / orientation, etc., conducted by CBSE, CSSC, various institutions, publishers, etc.,
To mention few- Principal attended a two-day National Conference at Bangalore on 19th and 20th December 2010. This is an Annual Conference of Principals conducted by CBSE every year.
- Ms. V. Kanagalatha and Ms. Shoba Ravi attended a 3 day workshop from 13.12.2010 to 15.12.2010 on “Innovative Teaching Techniques” conducted by PSBB, K.K.Nagar. This was a part of the Teacher Exchange Programme and Mr. William Blintz was the Resource Person. The power, potential and promise of reading was the topic.
- On 15.12.2010, Ms. A. Rekha, the Craft Teacher and Mr. S. Dinakaran, the Art Master attended a workshop on ‘Arts & Crafts’. The Resource Person was Pogo Celebrity Rob-Me.
- At Egmore Museum Theatre, Mr. Dinakaran, Art Master attended workshop on Art Installation in July 2011.
- Mr. S. Ananda Maniganda Ganesh and Ms. M. N. Rohini of Sanskrit department attended orientation programme on Bagavath Geetha Chanting of Chinmaya Mission.
- RSP Orientation Programme orientation lecture for students of VIII, IX & XI was held on 15.07.2011 at the school premises. Mr. Kevin, Instructor on RSP presented the lecture. More classes are to follow before the installation of RSP.
- 20 teachers attended a lecture by Shri. T.T. Rangarajan of Alma Mater at Kamarajar Hall on 16.07.2011.
- Ms. M. Sumathi & M. Umamaheswari attended a English Workshop on ‘Phonetics’ on 23.07.2011. This was conducted by Ratna Sagar Publications.
- Ms. S. Geetha, PGT Biology is attending a workshop today on ‘Genetic Engineering’ at SRM University, Kattangulathur.
